The Name of  the Village of Chateauneuf du Pape.

It has often been believed that Chateauneuf du Pape takes its name from a castle built on the ruins of an ancient one by Jean XXII a pope from Avignon. In fact this is not true.
Far from the hustle and bustle of Avignon, the popes had their residence built in Chateauneuf du Pape during the XIVth century.

The birth of the Wine of Chateauneuf du Pape.

After Clément V’s itinerant papacy, Avignon becomes the residence of the popes from the reign of Jean XXII, thanks to him Chateauneuf du Pape vineyard was able to develop itself. He brought with him to Avignon bankers and wine growers from Cahors in order to consolidate the decentralized papacy’s wealth. In Chateauneuf du Pape, the wine growers from Cahors reclaimed some ancients parcels of land left by the Templars chased away by Philippe Le Bel and they settled the main foundations which will allow Chateauneuf du Pape vineyard to grow.Jean XXII did even more for the village, he had a fortress built which became the second residence of the Avignon popes. The economic and the vineyard growth were made easier.

Chateauneuf du Pape Original Vineyard.

During the XIXth century, the commanding officer Joseph Ducos, owner of Chateau la Nerth, put all is will and wealth to serve a vineyard devastated by the phylloxera. In 1893, he had replanted and grafted Grenache, Mourvèdre, Counoise, Vaccarèse, Cinsault, Syrha, the firsts of the thirteen cépages. Also, on his own initiative the name of the village was changed from Chateauneuf Calcernier to Chateauneuf du Pape.

Chateauneuf du Pape Wine Makers’ Union.

After this crisis, in order to guarantee the wines quality, in 1894, Chateauneuf du Pape wine growers created the first "viticultural union" opening in 1923 on the creation of the Chateauneuf du Pape wine growers’ union to obtain the recognition of the label of origin Chateauneuf du Pape, based on the 1919 law.
Baron Pierre Le Roy de Boiseaumarié (1890-1967), Chateua Fortia owner, was the union first president to become later INAO first president.

The War and Chateauneuf du Pape.

On august 18th 1944, after French patriots destroyed the railway in Roquemaure, 700 prisoners from the ‘’Ghost Train’’ walked through the village, escorted by German soldiers in order to reach the village of Sorgues. This 17 Km forced march gave the inhabitants of Chateauneuf du Pape the opportunity to give to the prisoners food, despite the interdiction of the German soldiers and also allowed 20 prisoners to escape.
In 1954, the village administration voted the ban of the over flying, landing, taking off by aircraft called "flying saucer" or "flying cigars" over the village territory.

The Wine and the Viticulture in Chateauneuf du Pape.

At first confidential, the wine production throughout the years became quiet important. Its renown dates from the 18th century but reached its peak in 1929, with the recognition of Chateauneuf du Pape label of origin which set down very harsh regulation concerning the boundaries of the appellation, the thirteen grape varieties, the pruning, the sorting of the harvest, the vinification and the minimum alcohol content.
